The goal of WIZO’s work with Senior Citizens is to provide veteran WIZO members and retired senior citizens in the community with interests and activities.
According to statistics of the National Insurance Institute, 90% of the 600,000 senior citizens in Israel are independent and active in various frameworks. The Department provides them with stimulating activities and voices their concerns at leading senior citizens forums and government-linked committees.
WIZO's services for senior citizens are wide ranging and invaluable to the elderly in society whom they cater for.
WIZO Centers - social gatherings and cultural activities for senior citizens take place in 80 centers throughout the country.
Sheltered Workshops - WIZO operates occupational clubs for senior citizens who receive a symbolic fee for their work.
Three Telephone Hotlines – WIZO, together with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, operates 3 telephone hotlines for senior citizens, offering an "attentive ear" and support for the lonely elderly.
Regional Seminars - These are held on an ongoing basis and provided a forum for hundreds of senior citizens to discuss pertinent issues.
Departmental Workshops - Held for WIZO chairpersons of senior citizens clubs around the country, to update them on current issues and projects concerning the elderly.
United Nations International Day for the Senior Citizen – Once a year, WIZO organizes a special discussion group dealing with senior citizens’ contribution to society.
WIZO Parents Home The Alexander and Paula Gold de Leonescu Parents Home was founded in 1986 to provide a residential home for senior citizens - independent or in need of nursing care. It is located in one of Tel Aviv’s most central and prestigious neighborhoods, near the cultural and shopping districts and close to medical services. The Parents Home caters to 100 independent elderly singles and couples who live in independent units. In addition, there is a separate unit, providing all-compassing services for up to 36 seniors requiring nursing care. The residents receive an array of exceptional services shaped to suit their needs, including: 3 meals a day, 24-hour medical care, social support services, nursing assistance, cleaning services, laundry and daily maintenance, social and cultural activities. The home is run by a dedicated and professional staff, and is licensed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Health.
