On Monday, Naomi Coleman WIZO held a luncheon for 140 people at Mamlock House to celebrate 60 years of working for WIZO. They began life in 1948 as North Manchester Young WIZO, but after their beloved Chairman Naomi Coleman died, aged 38, they renamed their group in her honour. Lily Abramson, the only remaining founder member who is still actively working for the group was present and Beattie Levene, who joined a year later in 1949 and who has been chairman on and off for at least 30 years! Maisie Goldman, their Treasurer and the backbone of their society for the last 50 years was also present.
Each of them received an award for their outstanding commitment to WIZO and Israel from Loraine Warren, Chairman of WIZO.uk who came over from London Head Office especially for this diamond anniversary lunch. The lunch was opened by Mrs Janice Livingstone, whose late mother, Cecily Manson, belonged to the group for many years and was a great friend to both Beattie and Maisie. All the members of the group were also honoured with a certificate by Margaret Fink, Chairman of Manchester WIZO.
Over £3000 was raised and all the funds have provided safety equipment for the WIZO Day Care Centre located in the Barzilai Medical Centre in Ashkelon, which operates under emergency conditions and is on twenty-four hour alert. This WIZO nursery provides extended day care hours and three hot meals a day and currently takes care of 120 children, including those of the medical staff who are able to leave them in a safe environment whilst they are on duty.
