Glasgow WIZO marked its 80th Anniversary
Glasgow WIZO marked its 80th Anniversary as well as celebrating Israel at 60 and WIZO.uk at 90 at a Gala Dinner with a gathering of 150 guests. The Dinner included many WIZO chairs, past and present, as well as a large number of generous sponsors. The event was hosted by Deirdre Bernard, co-chair of the Scottish WIZO Council and her co-chair, Linda Davidson, gave the vote of thanks.
Flora Glekin, chair of WIZO Glasgow Central and Edith Eder, as well as a vice-president of WIZO.uk, read out a message from Brenda Katten, public affairs chairperson of World WIZO, who at the last moment, was unable to fly in from Israel. In her message she spoke of how, "although Israel is facing challenging times, there is still a great deal to celebrate. Israel remains a beacon of light in the fields of Science, medicine and hi-tech."
Guest speaker was former British Foreign Secretary the Rt Hon. Sir Malcolm Rifkind MP, QC, who spoke about WIZO and the challenges that Israel faces. At the same time he stressed: "Leadership is crucially important. Sometimes one must be prepared to be unpopular. In order to tell the truth, things have to be said that people do not always want to hear."
A magnificent emerald and gold ring, donated by Edward Green of Edinburgh (also in the table picture seated nearest the camera) was won by Dianne Granet on the eve of her 80th birthday (pictured in soon to be emailed photos with her husband Albert).
