Thousands of children in Israel are suffering from family neglect and violence. The 2010 Jewish Women's Week Campaign theme focuses on WIZO's work in 'Keeping Children Safe'.
As it has for 62 years, the money raised by JWW during the campaign and collection week, May 2-9, goes directly to support WIZO's essential social welfare work. This year's campaign will be given to a wide range of WIZO projects including:
- National Hotline for Prevention of Domestic Violence and Children at Risk
- Centres for the Prevention and Treatment of Violence in the Family
- Multi-Purpose Day Care Centres
- Therapeutic Centres - A Warm Home for Children
- Guided playgroups for children and parents together
The WIZO National Hotline for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Children at Risk
WIZO's telephone hotline is staffed by professionally trained volunteers. This service, which is operated in conjunction with the Ministry of Welfare, allows callers to remain anonymous and provides important support for victims in need of advice or vital assistance.
Centres for the Prevention and Treatment of Violence in the Family These centres deal with the treatment and prevention of domestic violence within a community framework, without removing family members from their regular environment. These centres are unique as they provide treatment for the entire family unit, assuring immediate assistance during crisis, operating therapeutic workshops for abusive spouses and providing support groups.
Nursery Schools with Family Therapy Programmes WIZO operates 16 multi-purpose day care centres for children up to the age of 7 from problematic families. The goal is to protect children at risk and to help their parents to provide better care for their children, in order to avoid them being placed with alternative families or put up for adoption.
Therapeutic Centres - A Warm Home for Children These operate in partnership with welfare services, providing a substitute home during the late afternoon and early evening hours for children from problem families. To avoid placing such children in an institutional framework, WIZO provides daily assistance and support within a community situation. Each centre is operated by a coordinator, guide and house mother, social workers and WIZO volunteers creating a warm and homely atmosphere, giving each child individual attention and support.
Guided playgroups for children and parents together Playgroups of this specialised type will help to improve communications between ineffectual parents and vulnerable children, giving them quality time together and enhancing relationships through play. They also help to improve the cognitive development of the children and help adults with poor self-esteem to gain confidence in their developing parenting skills.

Little Doron, one of 12,000 Israeli children counting on you
At just four years old, little Doron was found abandoned in a house in Lod along with a dog. The pair had been there alone for at least a week. Doron is still deeply traumatised and without WIZO's help, finding him a new home would be difficult. He needs to begin interacting with other children as soon as possible and learning to live a normal life.
Your willingness to collect or donate to Jewish Women's Week will help safeguard children in Israel like Doron, one of 12,000 who are known to be at risk.
Will you help us care for children in Israel by volunteering as a collector? We ask for a very small amount of your time during the first week in May. All we ask you to do is call on few Jewish homes in your local area.
You are sure to get a welcoming response - Jewish Women's Week is familiar and well-respected in the community. Contact jww@wizouk.org or call 020 7486 2691 to offer your help. If you can't find time to be a collector, we hope you will give a friendly reception to the person who knocks at your door on our behalf.
Please follow in the family tradition and make a donation to the Jewish Women's Week Campaign during the week of 2-9 May.
